BECC at COP 20 with the side event "REDD and beyond"

BECC researcher Fariborz Zelli is one of the organizers of a side-event at COP 20, in Lima, Peru on the 4th of December. The title of the event is "REDD and beyond". BECC researcher Tobias Nielsen is one of the speakers at the side-event.

REDD is one a series of incentive-based mechanisms for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to REDD, and partly out of criticism to it, a number of further political and financial instruments for forest protection in Latin America have emerged over the last years. But how effective are these various instruments with regard to forest protection? How socially inclusive are they with respect to indigenous communities and other vulnerable forest users?

- In our BECC-sponsored side-event, experts and stakeholders address these questions for several Latin American countries, including the Peru, the host country of this year’s UN climate change conference. Apart from BECC colleagues, our speakers include representatives of the Peruvian environmental ministry, forest protection NGOs, indigenous associations and German development agencies, says Fariborz Zelli, BECC researcher from the Department of Political Science in Lund.

Tobias Nielsen, BECC researcher from the Department of Political Science at Lund University are also one of the speakers. He will talk about "Equador's socio bosque and Peru's program bosque as role models".
